Dates of Service
2014 – Ongoing
The Zoo Atlanta Zambezi Elephant Center is a new, state-of-the-art indoor component of the Zoo’s new African elephant habitat, opening in summer 2019 as part of the Zoo’s new African Savanna. The building is three stories tall with stalls and care team support spaces for up to seven elephants, including provisions for up to two male elephants. The building also houses the habitat’s life-support system equipment for its water features and care team administrative offices with a keeper overlook balcony inside the facility.
Full building sprinkler coverage was provided for the new Zambezi Elephant Center. It was designed to comply with the 2013 edition of NFPA 150 (Standard on Fire and Life Safety in Animal Housing Facilities), which is newly implemented in the City of Atlanta. The elephant facility’s MEP systems also include the filtration equipment for the water features in the elephant habitats. The fire protection system also covers the chemical storage and use rooms for the filtration equipment.
