The Zoo Atlanta Elephant Barn is a new, state-of-the-art animal holding facility for the Zoo’s African elephant exhibit. The barn is three stories tall with stalls and keeper support spaces for up to seven elephants, including provisions for up to two male elephants. The barn also houses the exhibit’s life-support system equipment for its water features and keeper administrative offices with a keeper overlook balcony inside the barn. The crown jewel of the building is a third floor deck and indoor viewing area that is accessible to the public providing unprecedented behind-the-scenes views into the barn at all times of the year
Full building sprinkler coverage was provided for the new Elephant Holding Facility. It was designed to comply with the 2013 edition of NFPA 150 (Standard on Fire and Life Safety in Animal Housing Facilities), which is newly implemented in the City of Atlanta. The elephant facility’s MEP systems also include the filtration equipment for the water features in the elephant yards. The fire protection system also covers the chemical storage and use rooms for the filtration equipment.
